Matthew specialises in providing commercial and contractual
advice, assistance with the resolution of disputes, and in the
formulation and assessment of extension of time and loss and/or
expense claims.
He also lectures on commercial and contractual matters to
contractors and professional organisations. Matthew is frequently
appointed as an expert witness on quantum and time issues. He has
been involved in the provision of expert evidence on a number of
multi-million pound disputes and has given evidence in Court. He
has acted as an adjudicator of construction disputes on a number
of occasions.
Matthew was educated at Wallington County Grammar School for
Boys and, subsequently, Thames Polytechnic, qualifying
professionally in 1978. More recently, he successfully completed
the College of Estate
Management's Post Graduate Diploma in
Arbitration - achieving the distinction of being awarded the
Robert Jardine Brown Prize - and has since undertaken Fellowship
Assessment and adjudication training with the Chartered Institute
of Arbitrators.
Matthew is now a registered adjudicator on the panels of both
the RICS and CIArb and, more recently,
The Adjudication
Society.
Indentured as an articled pupil with John Laing, Matthew gained
his early experience on large building and civil engineering
projects. During his subsequent career, Matthew widened his
experience to include refurbishment works with a regional
contractor, and a spell in specialist subcontracting.
The majority of his career, however, has been spent with large
national and international contractors, mostly in the UK but with
a short period overseas.
A Regional Quantity Surveyor at the age of thirty, Matthew went
on to gain experience in both regional construction and major
projects with two large building and civil engineering
contractors, holding the positions of Quantity Surveying Director
and Commercial Director respectively with these firms.
Experienced in a very wide range on construction projects,
including major design and build and management contracts, Matthew
has, over the course of his career in contracting, been involved
in the preparation and settlement of a great many final accounts,
and in the successful resolution of a wide variety of contractual
disputes. In a number of instances, this has involved the
submission, negotiation and settlement of multi-million pound
claims. He has also gained considerable experience in the
management of disputes - including complex multi-party actions -
through both litigation and arbitration.
